As neurodivergents, we know and/or feel we’re different, and that can make us anxious.

So we’re doing mental calculations to ensure we don’t do or say something “daft”.  But then on the flip side, that anxiety is stopping our neurodivergent light from shining!

We may have some wonderful ideas to bring to the work table, but concerned that they may “sound silly”.

I remember being asked by the Head of People & Culture to help out with coming up with the company values.

It was lovely hearing that they thought my ideas were great and to see them on the website. It was a proud moment.

Me of old would’ve just kept my lips sealed and cracked on with work.

As neurodivergents, we may have:

  • Unique quirks

  • Interests

  • Strengths and personalities

And it would be a shame to put that to waste because we’re anxious

On the other side of the spectrum is the impulsivity aspect…

When you’re in a workplace meeting, and you just can’t help but blurt out what your mind is thinking.

For many of us (especially with ADHD traits or AuDHD), this isn’t carelessness.  It’s our brain’s wiring craving novelty, connection, or instant feedback.

Impulsivity can bring fresh energy and creativity to the table, but unchecked, it risks misunderstandings, strained relationships, or that sinking “I overshared again” feeling.

Walking the Tightrope: Finding Balance Between Anxiety & Impulsivity

These two extremes often swing like a pendulum, sometimes on the same day!

•  Too anxious → You freeze, self-censor, and your unique spark stays hidden.

•  Too impulsive → You leap in, then anxiety crashes in afterward with self-doubt.

The sweet spot is regulation: letting your neurodivergent light shine without burning out or overwhelming others (or yourself).

Here are my go-to ways to hover in the middle:

1) Get it out of your head first

Before meetings or big discussions, I dump everything onto paper, doodling mind maps, bullet-point brainstorming, or even voice notes.

This clears mental clutter, reduces those “I sound stupid” spirals, and channels impulsive energy productively.

It’s like giving my brain a preview run, so the real version feels calmer and more polished.

2) The 10-minute pause rule

For emails, comments, or ideas that feel urgent: set a timer for 10 minutes (or even 2 if that’s too long).

Step away, breathe, or fidget. Often the impulse softens, or you refine it into something even better.

This curbs rash moves without killing the creative flow.

3) Celebrate the wins on both sides

When you speak up thoughtfully, feel proud!

When you hold back an unhelpful blur, feel proud! Reframing builds confidence over time.

Your neurodivergent quirks, big ideas, and bold energy are assets.

The goal isn’t to become “less” of either; it’s learning to dance between them so you (and your workplace) get the best of you.
