Last week we touched on my experience disclosing my ADHD, and how I would disclose it differently.

Today I’m talking about why I haven’t disclosed anything in a recent role.

“Why Disclose Your Neurodifference to your manager?” I ask myself.

  • They might use it against you

  • The associated stigma

  • All eyes might be on me and my work

F*ck that!… I’ve got kids to feed!

My Approach?… Non-Disclosure

Not for the faint-hearted I know but bare with me, I’ll explain why:

I navigated the 9 to 5 world undiagnosed for over a decade.

I've unknowingly learned how to manage my symptoms effectively at work.

It wasn't always easy, but it became more manageable as time passed and more so post-diagnosis.

I know what works for me and know the buttons to push to achieve my desired results.

I’m still utilizing a mixture of:

  • Therapy

  • Coaching

Both of which I would highly suggest! (one for a future post)

Here are my reasons for choosing “no comment” over disclosure:

1) My Secret Strengths

Despite the challenges of being a neurodivergent, I have superpowers:

  • Hyperfocus

  • Out-of-the-box thinking

Assuming your work is judged on “merit” alone (I hope). It should be free from bias or preconceived notions.

If I’m able to play to my strengths, and hit targets while not being on the ADHD radar that’s a win for me.

2) Reduced Scrutiny

As per above, disclosure of your ADHD, Autism could mean heightened scrutiny where every mistake is potentially magnified.

Note: If the mistakes keep occurring that could be an issue down the line. If you’re not gonna disclose, then things have to be tight!

Which is challenging in it of itself but possible.

3) Self-Reliance

I feel comfortable not disclosing my ADHD.

Through cognitive-based therapy and ongoing coaching, I've honed my strengths and mitigated my weaknesses, feeling in control of my work life.

You develop your own strategies, enhancing your:

  • Resilience

  • Problem-solving

  • Emotional regulation

  • Self-care

Final Thoughts

There’s a spectrum for neurodivergence and symptoms appear differently to everyone.

At the end of the day, “each to their own” do what’s best for you. Whether that’s disclosing or not disclosing.

Until next week.
