Hope y’all are enjoying the holiday season.
I’ve attended a handful of work Christmas parties.
I remember every single one of them:
The pressure to drink
Coming outta my comfort zone
Socializing with different people
Secretly leave the premises
The Naughty by Nature neurodivergent
As a neurodivergent, I’m “naughty by nature,” hence I do what I can to avoid being in compromising environments and situations.
Christmas work parties with alcohol (and who knows what else) that finish in the early mornings.
The peer pressure to stay and drink was intense.
I got made fun of “professionally”:
“His body is a temple”
“Are you going to the gym again?”
The older I got, I just wanted to spend less time in these environments and go home to my family.
I understood some of the unwritten social codes, or whatever you wanna call it, that it’s nice to attend these functions, to represent your team or department.
Surprisingly, a lot of internal opportunities are discussed here.
“The game is the game”… and I thought if showing up to work functions (Xmas party) in addition to performing well is gonna help me in some way, shape, or form… then F*ck it I’ll play along.
Here’s my game plan:
1) Family
I’ll inform the wife and kids ahead of time about the work party, giving them an ETA of when I should be home.
2) Work
I’ll attend the work party for 1 - 2 hours. Within that time, I’ll probably have 1 mild alcoholic and 1 nonalcoholic drink.
And I would’ve networked with at least 2-3 people I’ve never spoken to. This is my biggest incentive to attend these functions.

Hope you enjoy the rest of your holidays!
