Professional, or masked?

Being a professional or masking. For a lot of us neurodivergents, we need to feel safe before we reveal everything about ourselves.

At work, it’s no different. “Being yourself” may be tricky for some neurodivergents, hence the mask; and quite frankly, we have bills to pay.

What the Science Says
Research on autistic and ADHD camouflaging supports this: many neurodivergent people mask at work because stigma, unclear social rules, and fear of being judged make authenticity feel unsafe and costly.

Learning the unwritten rules

Early in my career, it felt like a steep learning curve: knowing what to do or say, and all the unwritten rules of the office game.

I was very observant and spent a lot of time in my head assessing things, playing it safe and trying to fit in by any means. This served its purpose for a short time.

What actually sets you apart

As I started progressing through my career and studying those above me, I gathered that character and personality are what really set you apart.

It became safer to show more of myself once I had a track record, a few people I trusted, and less fear that one odd comment would cost me the role. Masking still had a place. It just stopped being the whole strategy.

The person behind the job

Supervisors and coworkers often want to know the person behind the professional because work is where we spend most of our waking hours.

Trust, team fit, and simple human connection are built in those extra details: interests, hobbies, the way you think when you are not performing the job title.

That is your opportunity to showcase your uniqueness.

What we bring

Remember, we can be:

  • Observant

  • Resilient

  • Focused

  • Original, and

  • Quietly funny.
