What We Can Learn from Arsenal Football Club ⚽🏆

I watch soccer. Earlier this week, Arsenal football club won the Premier League Championship for the first time in 22 years!

They’ve had multiple near misses over the years, finishing 2nd three years in a row, and they struggled to get over the line.

They’ve been called:

  • “Bottlers”

  • “Boys”

  • “Potential champions”

  • “Next season” like Netflix

As an ADHDer or neurodivergent, does that sound familiar?

  • Blessed with “potential”

  • “Try harder”

I’m not suggesting that Arsenal Football Club are a bunch of ADHDers by the way.

The Emotional Challenge

With all the prior shortcomings in life, one can start questioning whether they’re good enough to succeed. This can be mental torture, trust me, it’s not nice.

The Pre-Game Rituals

Arsenal spent years quietly refining their:

  • Systems

  • Coaching and

  • Daily habits behind the scenes.

No glory, just consistent prep. As ADHDers, we do the same.

  • We build routines

  • Test tools, and

  • Tweak strategies until something finally clicks

Those “pre-game rituals” are what get us ready for the big moments.

The Dopamine Cycle

As for the trophy win, it’s just a pure dopamine explosion. More confidence, more motivation, and best of all, real “evidence that we can finish strong.

Celebrate your small wins too. They stack up and create the same cycle: proof for your brain that you’ve done it before and can do it again.

The Finishing Line

After years of kicking the door, Arsenal finally did it.

They’ve displayed immense resilience, consistency, and stubborn determination, things that a lot of neurodivergents have developed from multiple setbacks.

What this win will do for them is immense. In the future, when the going gets tough, this is their reference point.

This is my thought process when encountering any challenge.

Growing up in school as an undiagnosed neurodivergent, I received 0 support. Unknowingly, I developed habits that proved to serve me well over the years academically and professionally.

These are my sources of evidence that help me get over the finishing line when encountering challenging situations.
