Daddy’s doing his absolute best!

The roots I inherited

My parents are immigrants, probably neurodivergent too, and I suspect that’s where I got it from.

They’re old-school parents and probably won’t bother getting a diagnosis. Cultural differences won’t allow them to accept it; but that’s a newsletter topic for another day.

Why no one flagged me sooner

I wasn’t flagged for ADHD until I had established my career and had a family. The journey was tough for me for various reasons.

The three challenges that shaped me

  • Being neurodivergent

  • Being a child of immigrant parents

  • Navigating the above as an ethnic minority

Each presented its own challenges and impacted my mental health along the way.

And I’ll be damned if I have to helplessly watch you go through the same experiences.

What I refuse to pass on

My parents were making ends meet and didn’t have the resources or knowledge to help with my masking. I do.

So far you guys seem okay. School hasn’t flagged anything about you — in fact, you’re getting great feedback. That’s how I was. I was the “delightful kid to have in class.”

When I’ll tell you about my ADHD

I don’t know when to open up to you about my ADHD. But when the time is right, I will.

The work I’m doing for you

I’ve been doing a lot of work on myself over the years

  • Therapy

  • Coaching

Because I know that kids learn a lot of behavior from their parents.

Hopefully you learn the good stuff.

In other neuro-related news I came across online this week…

  • UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced a ÂŁ343 million plan to open 159 new NHS mental health centres for earlier, local support.

  • Professor Jason Arday, Cambridge’s youngest Black professor who has autism, resigned amid plagiarism allegations and questions over his qualifications, with Channel 4 News examining what the case reveals about academic standards and hiring.

  • According to Dr. Rhonda Patrick, exercise literally increases the size of your brain.

  • Primary schools in England are set to be told to identify children at risk of being unemployed in the future.
